Teen raises $1 million for hospital

by JAMIE STENGLE

MCKINNEY, Texas — Ben Sater had vowed that before he went off to college, he would raise $1 million for the Dallas children’s hospital where he had received free treatments as a child.

After eight years’ worth of fundraising golf tournaments for kids, the soon-to-be Austin College freshman has reached the goal, with nearly $19,000 to spare.

Organizers announced Monday that they’ve raised $1,018,842 for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, an orthopedic center that treats patients free of charge.

“We got it,” the now 18-year-old told the group of kids gathered in McKinney on Monday for the second KidSwing tournament of the summer.

Volunteerism up among Americans in 2009

ANN SANNER

WASHINGTON (AP) – A million and a half more Americans volunteered to help with such activities as raising money, collecting food and tutoring children during the span of a year ending in September 2009, a period marked by job losses and a lousy economy.

About 63.4 million people ages 16 and older volunteered at least once between September 2008 and September 2009, according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That’s about a 1.6 million increase compared with the 61.8 million people who helped their communities in 2008, but not as many as the 65.4 million who lent a hand in 2005.

A little more than one in four Americans volunteer, the report showed.

UNV volunteers raise funds to help flood victims

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: In Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 150,000 people lost their homes after heavy floods on 1 September 2009. UNV volunteers are providing humanitarian aid to someunvjpg of the most vulnerable flood victims.

Four newborn babies sleep quietly in the arms of their mothers just behind the school, Kobri Nabmanejeuma, one of 88 sites in Ouagadougou where floods victims are receiving urgent humanitarian assistance. The youngest, a baby girl, is just 12 hours old and of course unaware about the unfortunate circumstances under which she was born.

“My baby is fine for the moment, but I do not have enough clothes for her and I doubt that the food I get will be enough to allow me to breast feed her,” says her mother Salamata Nikiema who, like tens of thousands of other people, saw her house collapse under the rain two weeks ago.

Students donate dog biscuit proceeds to animal shelter

BY BRETT BENNETT Northwest Arkansas Times

Owl Creek School thirdgraders made a product for dogs, and then decided to donate money they made selling the product to help their four-legged friends.

The students made $150 selling homemade dog biscuits one week, and on Wednesday, teacher Darlene Graf presented the money to Fayetteville Animal Services Superintendent Jill Hatfield at the school.

While they were promoted as “homemade,” the students actually made the dog biscuits in class using flour, beef or chicken broth, corn meal and powdered milk.

Graf said they sold the biscuits in small bags for $3.50 and large bags of $5 at the school.

“They also had to make an ingredient label,” Graf said.

They also incorporated math into the project by measuring the ingredients.
