Heroic Dachshund Saves Owner’s Life

Missy is being hailed as a hero for saving her owner’s life.

Charlie Burdon was recovering from open heart surgery when he had a vertigo attack. The 66-year-old was so ill he couldn’t even move.

Missy, sensing something was wrong, scurried to neighbor Charles Mitchell’s home to get help. Mitchell said the 11-year-old dog started barking relentlessly and wouldn’t leave until he started to follow her home.

Pit bull saves owner from fire at Berkeley animal shelter

By Doug Oakley
Oakland Tribune

A pit bull saved his owner as flames ripped through the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society Shelter early Thursday morning, but a dozen cats died in the flames.

Johanna White, who lived in an apartment above the shelter, said the dog, Baby, jumped on her as she slept and woke her during the fire.

White told television station KTVU-TV Channel 2 that Baby saved her life.

“I’m so grateful my dog woke me up,” White told KTVU. “I’m just so, so lucky. I have a good dog. I was not a dog fan either. He’s my husband and daughter’s dog. I may have to re-evaluate my stance. He’s definitely a keeper.”

Paraplegic Pit Bull Mix Inspires Kids with Disabilities

By Kathy Aiken

SALT LAKE CITY — When children find themselves in Salt Lake City’s Shriners Hospital — some with mobility issues and some in wheelchairs — they find it cheering to see how a wheelchair doesn’t have to slow a person down.

In this case, the “person” they find cheering is a dog.

Salt Lake Attorney April Hollingsworth rescued her trusty companion — her dog Piggy — a few years ago.

“I went to the shelter looking for my cat and had no intention of getting a new dog, and this dog smiled at me. She actually smiles,” April said. “I’d never seen a dog smile before so I had to have her.”

The dog melted her heart, so April took the pit bull-boxer mix home and named her Piggy.

Terrier that fought off coyote named hero dog of the year

By JAIMEE LYNN FLETCHER
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTE

ROSSMOOR — Ronnie, a fox wire terrier, was honored Tuesday for his quick actions in protecting his family from a coyote that jumped into their backyard and prepared to attack.

The 30-pound terrier was named the national Hero Dog of the Year by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Los Angeles at a ceremony at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles.

“Everybody is just amazed,” said Eric Christensen, Ronnie’s owner. “It’s just really incredible.”

“When we got Ronnie we named him after my hero, Ronald Reagan,” his wife, Janis, said. “I never thought that when we named him, Ronnie would be a hero, too.”

In August, Ronnie confronted a coyote that jumped a 6-foot wall into the Christensens’ yard. Janis Christensen was holding another of their dogs, an 8-pound silky terrier named Annie, when the coyote pounced into their backyard.

Ronnie jumped in between the coyote and his owner, Eric Christensen said.

The coyote attacked Ronnie but he fought back, snapping down on the coyote with enough force to send the scavenger scampering away over the fence.

Animals Find Homes in Chile and Teen Girls Find Hospitals in Australia

Elijah Woods Helps Animals in Chile

Elijah Wood who is best know for playing the character of Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, is an animal lover when he’s not escaping from the Dark Lord Sauron.

As you know, Chile suffered from a devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake on Feb. 27 where many people were injured, several died and innumerable homes were destroyed. In a disastrous mix of an earthquake it’s easy to forget about the furry little friends that grace our lives whom we learn to know and love. Wood was invited to visit Chile by Jorge Yarur, founder of the Yarur Bascuñán Foundation. The organization rescues and homes abandoned pets — Wood could not refuse the voyage down south being the animal lover that he is.

As a human being I am interested in the welfare of animals and people. There are many dogs in the streets that are without protection. This is the first foundation I have participated in.”

Rottweiler saves woman from attack

A judge has praised a hero dog after he chased off a sex attacker who indecently assaulted a woman in a park.

Two-year-old Rottweiler Jake was on his usual evening walk with owner Liz Maxted-Bluck, 49, when he heard screaming from a dense woodland and ran to investigate.

He found Esmahil Adhami, 18, molesting a woman he had dragged into the undergrowth.

The fearless hound lunged at the illegal immigrant and chased him away – and then circled the sobbing victim ‘like a guard dog’ until the police arrived.
